Each Homeworld is being held captive by Ripto and his minions, and it's up to Spyro to defeat them and bring peace to Avalar’s realms. But the wry humor of it now feels ahead of its time. Spyro has been brought to the land of Avalar to defeat the evil sorcerer Ripto who has brought war to Avalar’s Homeworlds. The goals were always of the world-saving variety (or Dragon Realm-saving, rather). Spyro has a basic palette of moves, boiling down to a short spout of flame, flying short distances, charging enemies with his horn-laden cranium, and jumping. He had attitude that imbued the world with a whimsical edginess. Platforming games at the time existed in entirely wholesome worlds, but Spyro always had more of a fiery bite to him.

But adult me still felt compelled by the basic gameplay loop and the charisma of the series titular winged hero.Īt its core, Spyro stood out from its contemporaries because of the characters.
